A visit to Kundu village took about three hours. In this remote location, over one thousand five hundred people including women and children who are usually the most vulnerable are hidden away from civilization in the capital city of Abuja. A journey of less than one hour took about three hours because of the nature of the road. In fact, we were told that had we visited in June-August, it would have been impossible to have access to the village.

As we journeyed through the narrow path called road, we occasionally saw pools of water, that our guide informed us was the source of water. Popularly called, FADAMA, this seasonal water source is available after rainfalls. Trees grow and shed their leaves in the water which alters the colour of the water and makes it very unpleasant to the eyes. No one knows the negative effects of the leaves as they stay and ferment in the water giving it a bad odour and foul smell. When it rains, water runs from everywhere carrying dirt in its path which gets eventually deposited in the body of water. The FADAMA is usually the only water source for humans and animals. While the humans drink, take baths and wash clothes in this water, animals freely defecate there also. All these constitutes significant pollution to the already bad water. The alternative source of water is a stream which is usually the only source of water during the dry season. Women trek long distances to queue up for water, and it is a highly mountainous area and very difficult to travel through. Most times the women spend a day to access enough drinking water for another day, and more water is necessary within two days. A number of diseases afflict the people in the area such as diarrhoea, typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery as well as body rashes.

When drilling in a village, the news goes around to the neighbouring villages that some people are here to help with water free of charge. Within days, numerous request will come in, and some residents or visiting missionaries also call after evangelistic outreaches to draw attention to painful conditions of the villagers. Friends, partners and churches are then contacted for ways and modalities for raising funds.
