Jerko Town (Block B #2) (population 750) is located along the Buchanan Highway right after the NP Gas Station. Madam Rebecca Garpue, who is the assistant chair lady, said in a statement how this town received the name "Jerko Town". Madam Rebecca said, "this area way back was a very deep and dark forest. People were very fearful because of the huge population of monkeys in the area at the time. These monkeys would on many occasions chase the farmers, and they would have to run from their farms to escape from being attacked. People passing through this dense forest during the hot sun and late evening would have their belongings taken from the monkeys and sometimes get hurt". The town was named because peoples stuff was "Jerked Away" in this area!!! As the people started to move into this area, the monkey population decreased as they moved deeper into the forest. The homes here are poorly built and tend to last only a few years, posing serious threats to their well being. The lack of safe drinking water has been a major challenge for the community. Now it is with great celebration for the people to have a completed well located in their town providing safe clean water for their families. Few good things have every happened to people living here in Jerko Town, but this event of safe drinking water is surely one of them! Thanks everyone for this blessing that beforehand was unimaginable!
This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support! |
