Asmau and the residents of her community did not have a safe water source after the hand pumps on their community wells broke many years ago and no on could fix them. From a young age and until she became a mother herself, Asmau would devote hours each day to fetching water. She would wake up at 5:00 a.m., walk for hours, and then come back to finish other household chores. Sometimes, fights would break out at the water source and she would come home empty-handed. Now, thanks to Lifewater Canada donors, the local wells (including this one) have been rehabilitated and safe, accessible water is available to everyone. Children are back in their classrooms throughout the day rather than spending hours in search of water. And mothers like Asmau have much more time available to care for their households.
