Nguuni Primary School in the Nuu region, Mwingi Central in Kenya's Kitui County, has 153 students. For everyone's water needs, the school is reliant on rain. And because it rarely rains in this region, it is very important to harvest as much rainwater as possible. Unfortunately, the school lacked harvesting and storage facilities. Lifewater Canada donors recently provided a rainwater catchment system which includes a 10,000-litre storage tank and hand-washing station. This enables the school to harvest enough water for drinking and hand-washing even in dry seasons. Peter Mbithi, a local parent, says the availability of clean drinking water gets the students excited about school: "They come more often than they used to because they know there is enough water to take care of their needs throughout the day.” |
