Matulani Primary School in the Nuu region, Mwingi central in Kenya's Kitui County, has 310 students. The school would ask parents to bring water to school when it was deemed necessary. For a community that has barely had enough water since time immemorial, practices such as regular hydration and handwashing were not deemed important. Lifewater Canada donors furnished the school with a rainwater catchment system which includes a large 10,000-litre storage tank and handwashing station so students and staff can harvest enough water for drinking and handwashing during rainy and dry seasons. Joyce Mwende, a student at the school, says they are learning the importance of handwashing and drinking enough water. It makes them feel good about themselves when they know they are clean -- a feeling that was new to them at first, she adds. |
