AIC Sosoma Primary School in Nguni, Mwingi Central in Kenya's Kitui County, has 160 students. All of them rely on rain to meet their water needs. Because the school has had very limited ability to harvest and store rainwater, students have been forced to endure dry periods each year when no water was available, says Deputy Headteacher Joseph Wambua.

Thankfully, Lifewater Canada donors recently provided a rainwater harvesting system which includes a large 10,000-litre storage tank and handwashing station. Now, the school can harvest enough water during the rainy season to take them through the dry season.

Students at AIC Sosoma Primary School are happy to have 10,000 litres of water in storage because it represents a promise that when the rains inevitably cease, children will have a tank to draw water from for drinking and handwashing, Joseph says.
