Gudi is a small cluster of Mada people who had no clean water after the hand pumps on their two wells broke many years ago. The community could not afford to fix the pumps so they went back to drawing dirty water from a hand-dug hole in a swampy area. Staff at Gudi Elementary School, where one of the broken wells is located, said they couldn't teach hygiene and sanitation while there was no safe water available to anyone. Some teachers described rushing home during study time to use their own toilet because those at the school were so filthy due to no water to clean them. Today, thanks to Lifewater Canada donors, both of the wells in Gudi have been rehabilitated, including new hand-powered pumps. Safe water is available to everyone for drinking and sanitation. |
