Although the residents of Kopati Gawu live relatively close to a scenic waterfall, it is still 35 kilometres away. So they were experiencing the same shortages of safe drinking water that plague many African communities, after the hand-powered pump on their well failed. People began drinking from the nearest streams and rivers -- sources that are unsafe and therefore left many people sick, and sources far enough from home that the people carrying the water could be attacked by thieves. Thanks to Lifewater Canada donors, the broken hand pump on the well has been replaced and the people of Kopati Gawu have restored health and all the safe and accessible water they need. |
