Erick Nyagwa from Ori Bwanda community in Kisumu County is among a group of men and women who would gather water for their families from a nearby river. It was their only available water source. He says everyone was relatively safe when it rained because the river water would remain fairly clean. But when the dry season began, the river would slow to a dirty trickle -- leaving people very fearful of contracting waterborne illnesses. “The dry season did not just bring water scarcity," Erick recalls. "It brought diseases as well. It’s has been hard.” This is why he and about 700 other residents of Ori Bwanda are excited about the new water well and hand pump in their community, provided by generous Lifewater Canada donors. The well is providing not only safe water, but improved health among children and adults. Girls and boys are attending school more regularly, and their parents are also more productive. |
