Kwatikila Primary School in Nuu, Mwingi Central in Kenya's Kitui County, is expected to serve about 150 students after its construction is completed. Because the school will have no local water source, Lifewater Canada donors have provided a rainwater harvesting system which includes a 10,000-litre storage tank and handwashing station. The system will ensure students have enough water to drink year-round and to develop a handwashing culture from the first day they arrive at the school. Area Chairman Johnstone Makau says the system will enable students and staff to practice safe hygiene and sanitation, which are not common in a region that suffers from almost constant water scarcity. |
