Life insurance can be another powerful donation tool to support Lifewater’s work. In the right situation, it can help a donor make a larger future gift than might otherwise be possible.

Common ways donors give through life insurance include:

  • Naming the Lifewater as a beneficiary
You can name Lifewater as a beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy. Upon death, Lifewater receives the insurance proceeds and your estate receives a charitable donation receipt.
  • Donating an existing policy
You may choose to transfer ownership of an existing, fully paid for, life insurance policy to Lifewater. In this case Lifewater becomes both policy owner and beneficiary. You would then receive a charitable donation receipt at the time of donation.
  • Purchasing a new policy
Some donors choose to take out a new life insurance policy, have it fully paid for up front, and name Lifewater as owner and beneficiary from the start. In this case, you would also receive a charitable donation receipt at the time of donation.

Personal financial situations vary and the details are important. We encourage all our donors to consult their insurance and tax professionals to understand if using a life insurance policy is the best donation tool for their specific situation.

Some employers offer matching donation programs. You can also designate United Way payroll deductions to Lifewater. Use this info on your United Way pledge form:

  • Charity: Lifewater Canada
  • City: Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5L1
  • Charitable Business Number: 885420737 RR 0001

Note: Some United Way offices charge a $16 fee and require a minimum $25 donation.

Planned or legacy gifts allow you to meet financial goals while supporting Lifewater long-term. Options include:

  • Bequests and Wills: Include Lifewater in your will—your lawyer can help. If you do, please email us at info@lifewater.ca.
  • Donor-Advised Funds: Get an immediate tax benefit while making ongoing contributions.
  • Charitable Annuities: Support Lifewater while receiving consistent income.

Donate publicly traded securities (such as stocks, ETFs, mutual funds etc.) directly. This can be a more simple and tax efficient way to donate instead of selling the investment first and donating the after-tax money second.

When securities are donated directly, the donor receives a charitable donation receipt for its value when Lifewater receives it. However, the donor will NOT have to pay the capital gains taxes that could apply if the security was being sold for a profit.

For example, if stock you bought for $1,000 is now worth $5,000, selling the stock could result in capital gain tax charges on the $4,000 gain. If you donate the stock directly, there would be no taxation AND you receive a charitable donation receipt for the full $5,000 value of the stock.

This can be done quickly and easily on your own through the highly secure CanadaHelps website HERE. Their processing fee is between 2-3% and comes out of the donated amount. Alternatively, you can reach out to our office directly at 1-807-622-4848 or info@lifewater.ca and we can have our RBC Dominion Securities broker help process the donation with a processing fee of around 1%.

Personal financial situations vary and the details are important. We encourage all our donors to consult their financial and tax professionals to understand if donating publicly traded securities is appropriate for their specific situation.

U.S. donors can contribute through our partner: Friends of the Great Commission and receive a U.S. tax receipt for their donation.

project
costs

The average costs to sponsor water projects are listed below. Prices vary by location due to factors like material and equipment costs, but we update our averages regularly for accuracy.

Can’t fund a project alone? We can match you with co-sponsors—or you can rally friends, family, your school, or community group to reach a sponsorship goal together.

PROJECT TYPE
COST
New Well: This includes a borehole, casing and filter screen, a cement pad, and an Afridev hand pump. Your gift will have lasting benefits because it provides an average of 500 people with a supply of safe, easily accessible water.
$5,500
Well Rehabilitation: Replace a broken hand pump: Rehabilitating an existing well is the fastest, cheapest way of providing safe water to a community. The fact a well has already been drilled indicates there is sufficient water, and local demand for it. Your gift will offer safe water by providing a new hand pump, a sanitary cement seal and cement pad. The repaired well will be disinfected and tested to ensure it’s safe!
$1,500
Pump Repair: Sometimes the only thing stopping safe, accessible water from flowing is a broken hand pump that can be easily repaired by our trained team.
$140
Community Washrooms: With your support, we are building communal toilets at schools, clinics, etc., then teaching villagers to build family latrines near their homes. You can stop the spread of disease at its source and eliminate the need for children and adults to risk their safety by wandering into the bush or jungle to urinate or defecate.
$2,200 to $6,500
Health + Hygiene Workshop: Provide men and women with the skills and training they need to help keep their families healthy. The topics include how to keep drinking water safe, how to build hand-washing stations, and how to provide critical First Aid to young children who are suffering from “running stomach” or diarrhea.
$100
Dignity Kits: Give the gift of a “dignity kit” — a reusable, zippered bag containing 5 washable and reusable sanitary pads. We distribute dignity kits to women and girls at health and hygiene workshops, ensuring menstrual periods do not stop them from attending school and continuing their work and education.
$5

Notes:

  • Well prices can vary with well depth, location (i.e., is the well easily accessible or remote? Are we drilling into rock or sand?), and country.
  • Washroom prices can vary by the type, size and complexity of the project and the cost of materials in each nation.
  • These are average costs at sites selected by local Lifewater teams. A project may cost more at a site the sponsor selects if we are not already working in that area.
  • If you want to sponsor a well or other project in Africa or Haiti in a community of your choosing, the cost may be at least $1,000 more. For a well with limited public access, the cost is typically at least $3,000 more.
  • Villagers actively participate in the work, usually contributing $100 to $300 towards each project through cash payments, supplies, labour, and services.

Other Sponsorship Needs

PROJECT TYPE
AVERAGE COST
Pick-up Truck: Transportation is one of the main logistical problems in developing countries. Trucks are constantly loaded to the limit and need to be driven in extreme heat and over very rough roads. Without reliable transportation, our safe water drilling program grinds to a halt. Your donation will purchase sturdy, used Toyota four-wheel drive pick-up trucks to transport all our drilling equipment and supplies to the villages in need of safe drinking water. We’ll ensure they are properly operated and maintained.
$20,000
Training: Equipment, trucks, and supplies alone do not provide safe drinking water. Local people need hands-on training and support from knowledgeable volunteers to effectively drill boreholes, complete wells and replace or repair hand pumps. A Liberian bishop helped dedicate the first well drilled by Lifewater by quoting the old saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day…. Teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
$4,000
