Some community details (provided by our in-country partners) |

This large community has a population of approximately 800 people. This area originally was an old dump site for garbage disposal, during the operations of the Liberian-American-Swedish Iron Ore Mining Company. The company called this area"Dirt Hole", and the community still uses that name. It is very swampy and during heavy rainfalls and the rainy seasons, swamp water overflows and contaminates the hand dug wells in this community. With this being their only source of water, many have suffered from running stomach, typhoid and other water borne diseases, including a very high death rate. There are no clinics, schools or churches because a lot of people have gone to other communities for health solutions, education and church services. Every year from July to September the flooding forces people to leave their houses and seek shelter elsewhere. The swampy land causes devastation when it floods, but it is also used to grow and harvest pumpkin, okra, pepper sugar cane, and greens. This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support! |
