Alendu Secondary School

The teachers, students, and parents at Alendu Secondary School are so grateful for the gift of a new well at our school. We are happy to have safe water for our school activities and households.

Alendu Secondary School in Kenya's Kisumu County has 865 students. To meet their daily water needs, the school would spend about $56 a month to buy water from local vendors -- an enormous amount of money in a relatively impoverished area. Worse yet, there was never enough vendor water for everyone, so students often had to go out in search of water. The time and effort involved kept students out of the classroom and often left them too tired to study when they were in class. Thankfully, Lifewater Canada donors have funded the drilling of a new well and installation of a hand-powered pump at Alendu Secondary School. This is enabling the students and teachers to have enough water for their school activities, and also for many nearby residents who would walk long distances in search for water to now have it only a short distance away. The school's grateful administrators say the $56 they are saving each month, because they no longer need to buy water, is being channeled into improving the students' diet while they have more time than ever before to focus on their studies.
