The Ebbo people, nestled in the Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. For generations, they have thrived as farmers, cultivating the land to grow rice, yam, and sweet potatoes, and herding cattle that dot the landscape. Their spirit of enterprise extends beyond agriculture, with many actively engaged in trade, skilled trades, and serving in the public sector, a workforce bolstered by the establishment of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University in 2005. However, this community's history is also deeply intertwined with the powerful Niger River Basin. While the river sustains their agricultural way of life, its proximity has also brought immense challenges. The Kuchi people have endured a recurring battle against devastating floods, with significant events recorded in 1989, 1995, 1996, 2012, and as recently as 2020. These floods have repeatedly swept through their low-lying areas, causing widespread displacement, destroying vital crops, and leaving homes and infrastructure in ruins. Yet, through each disaster, their resilience has shone brightly. Despite their strength and perseverance in the face of environmental hardship, a more insidious daily struggle persisted. As Reverend Marcus Bidayelo of ECWA Kuchi poignantly described, a basic necessity – water – had become a source of sickness. Their only accessible water source was marred by dangerous contamination, a breeding ground for germs and fouled by animal waste. This grim reality cast a long shadow over the health and overall wellbeing of the entire Kuchi community. But now, the narrative has shifted dramatically. Thanks to the compassionate intervention of Lifewater, a new chapter of hope has begun. The drilling of a borehole has ushered in an era of clean and safe water for the congregation of ECWA Kuchi and the wider community. The relief is palpable, a tangible weight lifted from their shoulders. No longer are families forced to rely on a source that threatened their health with every drop. Now, clean water flows freely, offering the promise of improved sanitation, a reduction in waterborne illnesses, and a brighter, healthier future for the Kuchi people. Reverend Bidayelo's heartfelt thanks resonate deeply with the entire community: "We are so overjoyed and full of gratitude to Lifewater... we now have clean safe and suitable water at our disposal." This project stands as a powerful testament to the transformative power of clean water, turning a long history marked by both resilience and hardship into a compelling story of renewed health, dignity, and community wellbeing.
