An estimated 50 million Nigerians (or 10 million households) defecate in the open each day due to a lack of water and toilets. This means that since October 2019, there have been more people openly defecating in Nigeria than in any other nation in the world, including several such as India with much larger populations.

This practice pollutes the environment and leaves people highly susceptible to disease. It’s one of the primary causes of death among children.

Gyidna is a village in Nigeria that did not have access to clean water or toilets. People depended on an open hand-dug well on the outskirts of the community. The only alternative involved walking more than a mile through a jungle filled with dangerous animals to a river filled with camel dung -- all of these risks to bring home a bucket of water filled with germs and bacteria.

Through the support of these Lifewater Canada donors, there is now a community toilet in Gyidna. These donors also funded a new water well and the rehabilitation of another well that had broken down. 

Adults and children in Gyidna have the opportunity to live with dignity and good health.
