Nuu Primary School in Mwingi, in Kitui County, has 400 pupils. It is in an area of Kenya that is extremely hot and dry. Jacinta Nzuki, a teacher, says the students would sometimes go the whole day without water for drinking and washing because none was available. Jactina says when it rains in the area, and water accumulates in creeks and ponds, the intense heat causes these water sources to dry up very quickly. “The students used to suffer a lot.” She and other staff at the school say they are very grateful for a new rainwater catchment and storage system, including a 10,000-litre tank, provided by Lifewater Canada donors. “This gift couldn’t have come at a better time.” Jacinta says she no longer needs to watch helplessly as the young students at the school cry for water because they are so thirsty. The new system from Lifewater includes a handwashing station that is especially valuable when the region isn’t just battling stomach aches occasioned by poor hygiene due to water scarcity, but also waging a war against COVID-19. "Our students are washing their hands frequently and we do not have cases of upset stomachs in the school. It rained and the tank is full, and the school is happy. The tank and the handwashing station were a timely gift. On behalf of the entire school, I am so thankful and feeling blessed."
