A message from the community

The citizens and people of the Foto community take this time to extend our thanks and appreciation to the Lifewater family for giving us a well and hand pump that will provide safe drinking water for us. We say thank you ever so much because we have drunk water from open wells and other areas and buying sacks of water that everybody could not afford all the time. May the almighty God continue to bless your organization as your organization continues to serve humanity.

-- Ben Y. Boyen, Acting Community Chairman and Well Caretaker

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Foto is in the Duazon community in Liberia's lower Margibi County. Most of the locals fish for their livelihood.

Despite water in which to fish, there has been no safe drinking water in Foto. Some people could afford to buy from vendors but most depended on shallow streams to which they must walk long distances. The streams are contaminated, so drinking from them has left many people with diarrhea and related medical problems. Someone even died last year from bad water.

Because it's usually women and children who walked to the streams, it took time from their housework and schoolwork.

Recently, Lifewater Canada donors enabled our team to visit Foto and drill a deep well that is providing safe and accessible water for everyone. The well has brought lots of relief and a joy to the community. Women have more time to care for their families and children are in school, working towards a brighter future.
