Access to toilet facilities is a daily challenge for many in Nigeria. This problem is particularly acute in northern Nigeria, where only 30 percent of the population has access to adequate sanitation -This contributes to a high prevalence of waterborne diseases and threatens the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
In Wuna, open defecation is a traditional practice from early childhood. Latrine use in the Wuna community highlights that barriers to latrine use have to do with culture and social norms rather than economic conditions. In the course of building this toilet, we met some members of the community that prefer "to receive fresh air in the open while defecating." Therefore, the problem of open defecation is not all about access to facilities but the culture and norms.
In the Wuna community, open defecation brings about waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, and polio, leading to preventable loss of life, especially that of underage children.
A toilet for the school and church community in Wuna will help create a shift in paradigm in the Wuna community. Now that the problem of lack of a washroom is over, a new era of reorientation begins.
